Dwight & Muriel’s Lights on Broadway Story
Discount Lighting opened a showroom in 1974 which became Lights on Broadway in 1976. In March of 1986, Dwight & Muriel Wirz purchased the company. The business was in trouble and Dwight had been hired by the previous owners as a consultant to turn it around. In the midst of that process, the owners decided to sell the store. Having worked with selling businesses as well as turning them around, Dwight brought the proposal to Muriel and they decided to purchase the store. They realized very quickly that they had quite a varied group of clientele in retail customers, builders, and builders’ clients who were the end-users. Dwight and Muriel decided that being end-user friendly was their ultimate goal, because it would best serve all their customers.

It is our belief that educating clients in their lighting options is the best and most honest way to do business. Planning and lighting knowledge have been the hallmarks that separate Lights on Broadway from its competitors. The home is one of the largest investments most people make, and lighting directly affects the value of the home.

By the 1990’s mass merchandisers were prominent, especially the Home Center concepts, Home Depot, Menards and Lowe’s. Their fierce competition at low prices made us question the future of small specialty stores like Lights on Broadway. In the year 2000, however, a lighting co-op was formed to give showrooms a larger voice through joint marketing and purchasing. We decided to expand LOB in order to better compete with home centers through expanded products, sharp buying and quality knowledge. We were in the air on our way to a Lighting One co-op conference in Chicago on September 11, 2001 when the Twin Towers were attacked. Three tough days later, armed with the prospects of this co-op, we returned to Minneapolis by car, and began planning the expansion of the store.

The new Lights on Broadway opened in 2004, expanding to 30,000 square feet from a 10,000 square foot building. The larger store allowed us to commit to creating an environment that offers exceptional customer experiences.

We are passionate about our environment, both the visual experience created in our store, and the intuitive atmosphere, the great “vibe” that compels our customers to return again and again. Lights on Broadway is about serving our customers because they are our true business.
